Wheel hub collar

This may be a dumb question, but do the collars between the wheel bearings get packed with grease? I am using sealed wheel bearings so I know those won’t need grease but I am unsure what to do with the collar between the bearings. Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

If you are using sealed bearings you are good to go. No more grease needed.

Always worth greasing the wheel spindles and nuts though, it makes them MUCH easier to get out again in the future, as the spindle and spacer are both steel.
If they are assembled dry and then rust even slightly they can be a real pain, hence the number of butchered / bruised spindle ends and wheel nuts you see on older bikes.

Yep - a smear of assembly grease is always helpful. Swingarm bearings and pins seem to be the biggest culprit on these bike from my experience.

I just de-butchered a couple of rear wheel spindles. The early type seems to suffer most.



First you have to stick some more metal on.



Then you have to take some off.....



The later ones are better but still get beaten up.

Not even sure where the damaged one came from. Interesting that they get such a pounding on the way in, though.......

Stripping the chrome usually causes some corrosion and the copper layer doesn't help in that respect.
