rims and chrome pieces question

Post by choctaw » Wed May 25, 2016 7:39 pm

I am restoring my 66 Dream (305) I have completely tore it down and bagged and tagged everything.all my chrome parts are pitted and need to be redone.am I better off cost wise to have re chromed or pay the price for new parts. Also, my rims (that have been disassembled) have pits and need to be restored also.I have searched every where for new rims. There are some out of Thailand But I heard the geometry may be off somewhat.Any comment will be appreciated.

Consider having the chrome done at one time including the rims.
As I recall the DREAM doesn't have many chrome parts. .......................lm

As LM says - best to get them done at one time. You may need to shop around for a shop that will do the rims. The spoke holes act to tear up the polishing mops.

There are quite a few 'difficult' parts on the Dream like the lower rear shock covers. Usually one side is much worse than the other. Tank covers need to be very straight to chrome nicely. The front suspension loop and a lot of the front fork bolts are chrome plated.

There is no easy answer to your question about the cost benefit of new parts vs. rechromed. You'll have to determine the cost for rechroming first, if it's even available to you. Some NOS chrome parts are not even available for the Dream. In my restoration, I had no access to a plater. I used a mix of new parts and old, even if not rechromed. I even purchased old parts where the chrome wasn't perfect, but was better than what I had. Like you, my wheel rims were toast. I purchased new rims from Central Wheel in the U.K. ( http://www.central-wheel.co.uk ) and am happy with both the company and the product.

Yes, they're correct. I knew it was an issue and made sure it was addressed. I also sent them my hubs and had them relace the wheels with new spokes.
