Loose starter chain

Post by Woodsie » Sat Nov 14, 2015 10:43 pm

My starter chain is very loose. Can I adjust it or do I have to replace it? Or is there another option?

You can try putting some washers under the starter mounting bolts.

Mine is so loose that it is chewing away the bottom of the case. I was going to replace it but the price for NOS is totally out of line. They must be a standard Metric chain (which could be bought by the foot for a dollar or two) but I haven't gotten around to measuring the links and figuring out what chain to ask for.

Has anyone else chased down the modern standard for these chains?

If yours is that bad I'll send you a used one for mail cost but I'll see if I have a new one first. .................lm

Thaks for the replies. I think I am going to space the starter out a little bit. I am not going to make it tight, just enough so it doesn't hit the case. I had the side cover off as it had developed a leak and I found the seal at the kick lever shaft had come out so I put that back in. I'll be back on the road in no time.

i shimmed the starter motor out .020 thou. I had some .005 shim stock so I started adding layers until the chain got tighter. It is still what I would consider loose but not dragging on the case. There is 3mm clearance between the chain and the case. There is 17mm total play in the chain (up and down)
