Laying up my bike your thoughts please.

Im going to lay my CB77 bike up for the winter im a fine weather rider now, I have done this for many years now only keeping my 500 Triumph to use.

Last year I put some petrol stabilizer in the tank to stop it going off it worked OK come summer some 4 months later.

Now this year I want to drain all petrol out and carbs and put something into the tank to remove some very slight rust patchs and I mean slight from the bottom of the tank I think the problem is the Ethanol they put in the petrol (gas) here in UK it atracts water I read.

I have done some research on the web and it looks like Apple Cider vinegar is good and cheep at removing rust , then I will coat the inside of the tank with 2 stroke oil. I do not wish to use anything that may affect the paint on the tank if I should get any on it.

Your thoughts what would you do.?

I used mineral spirits and added a quart of ATF when stored for more than one winter. I don't know that it will do anything for the rust that is present but definitely will keep it clean and not go bad IMO. I had heard of the suggestion of diesel but decided against it due to the fact that it may contain BIO and perhaps be worse than gasoline. When I emptied it out I re-used the mineral spirits in my parts washer.

I've had great success with Evaporust, but I've not used it with a gas tank mounted on the bike. Off the bike, I've simply filled the tank with the product, let it sit for a day or two, then rinsed it out, dried it with a vacuum cleaner (in reverse), then put it into service. In your case, you could let the product dry in the tank after draining it and it will protect from new rust formation in storage. I've done that too. The used product is still good. I've derusted other parts in it, most recently some horn parts.
