Spedo issue!!

Post by underground » Tue Oct 01, 2013 4:28 pm

Working on a 1964 305 dream. The speedometer was change several years ago with original oem speedometer. Now the speedo runs way too fast.I know there is several ratios or models of speedo drives.I have tried a 1967 speedo drive and it changes but still runs way fast. How do I tell what speedo ratio to use with the replacement spedo? Or can I adjust or change drive unit that is on wheel? Thanks for any help on this issue.

speedo running fast

under G,

My parts book says everything from early '62 forward uses the same speedo drive.

I can't tell for sure, but if your speedo is running fast it may need lube internally at the main/slave shaft point, or it may not have had the spring tension adjusted correctly.

You might check to see if the odometer is reading correctly first, that will tell if the drive ratio is correct. Just ride it between two or more mileposts, out on the road, and compare the reading.
