Shortening Speedo Cable

Post by akpasta » Sat Mar 09, 2013 9:11 pm

Hello,

I got my speedo restored at Foreign Speedo, and it seems to work really well but the speedo pin tends to waver a little bit from 0-15. They explained to me that the cable could be too long, and to grind it down, otherwise it will cause premature wear. Is there a particular length it should be? Any tips to grinding it down to avoid splitting up the wound cable and ruining the cable? I was thinking to just take the tip of the cable to the face of a dremel cutting disc and grind it down isntead of cut material off. Any tips would be great.

Thanks.

You can use a dremel with a cutoff wheel, but it will fray and start to unwind itself it you're not careful. Why don't you try to not tighten it down so much when you screw the cable in, just leave it finger tight or a little less than that. Then take it for a test ride and see if that solves your problem before you start cutting away at the cable. I'm assuming the cable is lubed properly?

What they're talking about is the tip if the cable is up inside too far. I once had an MGB that had that problem, the needle would bounce, but MG's had that problem anyway so nothing I did solved it. This may be the case as well. You may have to live with it.

You could test to see if this is the problem by slackening the cable retaining nut a few turns. Was this a problem before the speedo was restored?

It was a problem before the speedo was restored too, speedo pin and tach pin, but the tach does not waver at all now so I think that's fine.

The speedo however was wavering between 0-15mph. I took the tip of the speedo cable to the grinder and took quite a bit off, now it only wavers a bit between 0-10mph and is straight as an arrow after that. I'm not sure it would be wise to shorten it any more, does anyone think a little wavering of the speedo pin between 0-10mph will be enough to shorten the life of the speedo?

As far as tach and speedo cable lube, is white grease recommended? I have also heard people say you should have NO grease on it, as it can mess up the inner workings of the tach and speedo.

thx.

No. And you probably won't be getting a speeding ticket either. No worries.
