Wheel balancing

Post by Eljeef » Mon Aug 09, 2010 8:25 pm

Hi folks. I am about to have my tires, tubes and rim strips changed. How much of the wheel has to be together before they can be balanced? I just had the drums turned so I have to put the bearings in (after I clean and repack them ). Can they be balanced after that or does the entire hub assembly have to be put back together on each wheel? Thanks for any input. Jeff H.

It has to be balanced as a complete assembly - wheel, tire and tube. Tires have heavy spots and the valve is a heavy spot in a tube.

Yes, wheel, tire, and tube...but does the brake drum have to be completely assembled?

No, the brake drum is a fixed assembly.

If you are installing the tire yourself, look for the yellow dot on the tire and align it with the valve stem.

Thanks everyone. Tires are done. Just to clarify though, I was trying to find out how much of the tire assembly (not including tires, tubes, and rim strips ) needed to be together before the tires could be balanced. The answer to my question is this: You need the rim, spokes, hub (just the hub, no brake shoes or springs or the cover). You do not need the bearings and the spacer between the bearings. If you are using dyna beads you can dump them in the tube before it is installed and voila, you are done the balancing part. Turns out though that my rim is damaged on the internal side and therefore the dyna beads were not put in to avoid any further vibration. My education continues. :) Jeff

You the wheel balanced like it will be when you ride. If it's attached to the wheel and spins, it should be balanced. Think of it this way, when everything is assembled and on the bike, you can pull the axel, remove the wheel to balence it. The brakes don't spin, so you don't need these.
