Powder Coating Motor

Post by gltrench » Thu Jan 08, 2009 1:44 pm

Hi Everyone,
I recently came accross a Superhawk that the owner powder coated the cases and top end of his motor and aluminum silver color. I have only seen pictures (would like to see it in person), but it seemed to look really good and appear stock. Has anybody done this? I'm just curious of how "correct" it looks and if the powder withstands the stresses and heat a top end goes through.

Any thoughts?

powder coating

Powder coating is usually pretty thick compared to regular paint. It can withstand maybe 300 degrees or so. I think the oven temp of my powder guy runs at 450 degrees.

Sumax used to coat a lot of HD air cooled cylinders. Not sure what they used. I think they still have a website.

I would think it would make the engine get pretty hot, at least the cylinder fin parts.

I'm curious myself.
