CL77 Luggage Rack
CL77 Luggage RackWhile perusing "Greed Bay" this AM, I ran across a rear luggage rack supposedly for a CL72/77. Looked decent, but hadn't reached reserve (?) and before placing a bid I checked shipping and it was just over $40.00 !!! Needless to say it won't be coming to my house as I bid on the next rack whereas the shipping was only $11.00 or so. I know that one tries to get all the traffic will bear, but don't try to recoup a low bid with shipping cost. JMHO I always try to be reasonable with whatever I sell as I do CL parts at times and also CBX parts. Not a business, but just a pasttime for me. Thanks for letting me vent!!
Re: CL77 Luggage Rackcbxmountainman, I too have noticed the law of Supply and Demand has really been pushed to the limits on Flea Bay due to the rarity and lack of reproduction parts for these bikes. IE, I still can't as of yet, force myself to pay $50.00 plus a hefty shipping charge for a headlight rim. You notice I said as of yet. It has gotten to the point the first thing I check in a listing is the shipping costs. It seems to be getting more and more prevalent to go for a low opening bid and raise the cost to mail through the roof. I still check the listings every couple of days though. Good therapy and some of the Buy It Now Prices make me laugh.
Guys, I too have been noticing BiN price-hikes on some items, particularly those from Asia. I'm as guilty as the next enthusiast when it comes to bidding strong for something I really need (for 'need', look up 'want'!), but sometimes there's a limit. Like a NOS toolkit for $430 (bid-up), and $399 (BiN) for a side stand! The stand was from USA, BTW.
Also, there's an eBay couple, under the name of 'snelson1227', who calls those who ask reasonable questions like "why do you charge an extra $10 'handling', plus actual, for non-US shipping" eBay deadbeats, then blocks you. Those who pad out their revenue with shipping increases do risk reprimand and expulsion from trading there. Rightly so, too! I buy, and I sell on ebay. I charge a $5.00 handling fee for international transactions, and here's why. First, I can't just print a shipping label, and hand off the package to the mailman, or drop it at the post office. I have to stand in line, 5-15 minutes, to have labels stamped and signed.Secondly, Paypal charges a percent of total payment. So if you but a part for $10, and pay $30 shipping, they take thier percentage of $40, and I lose even more after the ebay listing, and final value auction fees. I refused to ship internationally for a while, but all I got was e-mails asking why won't you ship here and there? Hope this helps understand the why of it. And of course I do realize that there are a lot of sellers padding thier shipping fees. When it comes time to rate them, flame them on shipping costs! JMHO
davomoto davomoto, Well said. I too sell parts on eBay and all my auctions carry the following shipping line of late, "Shipping is $3 mailing within continental USA, $4 mailing to Canada and $5 mailing to UK and Thailand." PayPal not only charges on the total amount paid they also charge a currency exchange fee for any payment with non US currency. I am not sure that by the time I drive to the PO and stand in line 20 minutes to have each item going outside the US hand stamped I am even breaking even. I want and appreciate the business from guys like Steve in the UK, and Jan in Norway but eBay, PayPal and the Post Office sure make it difficult. How about the 12% eBay now charges for fixed price auctions on "All Other Categories" sales?
I don't disagree with any of your views there, Davo. My eBay sales take me the same route at the Correos (Post Office); the main exception being that every single one of my shipping transactions is the same as your worldwides as a) I live on an island, and b) I sell nothing domestically.
What I objected to with this snelson geezer was being blocked for asking! Bloody cantankerous tosser; and he wanted me to increase an offer over his BiN, dealing off eBay, as an incentive for him to lift the block! Told him to stick his friggin' stuff..... Anyway, 'nuff said. I completely agree with your opinion of kicking sellers in the nuts when rating their shipping costs if they turn you over. Although I have to say that most of the sellers I've bought from have been fair, straight-up and honest.
