Then I dabbed two drops of machine oil on the tip of the cable and put it back together. Still bad. Seems worse in fact. Every time I put it in gear and go, it hits 3k and tears up to 8-10k, making an ugly whirring noise. It only goes back down (and only sometimes) when I click it into neutral.

What now?? Do i have to take the speedo unit apart and investigate? I keep reading about people 'sending them off' for repair; is this something worth attempting on one's own? What would cause a rebuilt unit to be damaged so soon? Could the problem be on the engine side?
I suspect the prior "rebuild" was not done properly. The cables do nothing more than spin, and if they're spinning freely as the should the problem is in the speedo or tach itself. Doubtful any rebuilder would replace ALL the moving parts and it's possible something that was working at the time of the rebuild has begun to be not so cooperative. This stuff is OLD!

Today the speedo got totally fucked. I was on the way home, and the tach started going insane, rolling around in circles and hitting the speedo needle, never did that before. I knew this was bad, but I didn't have a screwdriver either way so I continued on my way home, hoping it wouldn't case more damage. Eventually it banged into the mph arm enough and both got stuck.

I stopped by Charlie's Place in SF for some advice. He said it needs another rebuild for sure. He warned very very very strongly against a certain couple of guys in Southern California I believe who he said damaged quite a number of speedos that he had sent down some time ago and did very shoddy work on other folks' units, stories of which have been relayed back to him. He recommended a place to me... Peter Rose at "Digital Pizza" who does a site called CB Restorations. He said the guy does great work. He also estimated it would cost only about $75 to get it fixed, which doesn't sound too bad.

Hey Davo, out of curiosity, who did you send the speedo unit to when it was rebuilt/re-set? Curious if it was the same folks that Charlie warned against. Could save you some dough in the future.

Can I pick your brains?

What white grease do you recommend? Is it imperative to be white grease?
Thanks.

Any brand will do.
It has been used in area's where lube is needed but will be hot/cold and not thicken or thin or dissipate with heat.
Comes in tubes/cans here in the states. .........lm

At this point, he might need that white grease for another purpose. :-)

har har.

I found a guy in the bay area who will fix it for somewhere b/w 50-100 bucks. You think it's worth pulling it apart and risk breaking it worse or should I just have him fix it?
