I'm betting you're right on the nickel plated brass nipples--I for sure know they are brass for the base and I wonder now what made me suggest a cadmium plating.

Hi,

I checked with a magnet, no steel, so nickel plated brass seems a logic assumption.
But nickel plating has a silver color, why seems these nipples look yellowish ?

Could it be the underlying brass that causes the yellowish tint?

Hi,

No, I don't think the layer is so thin that you'll see the yellowish from the brass.

Nickel is silver in color, but with a yellow hue to it. My guess is the nickel has worn away with time. I have nipples that have some of the nickel worn off from age and the brass is showing thru.

regards,
Rob

Spoke nipples on my Matchless are Nickel plated brass, I'm sure. They are definitely definitely yellowish. Compared with the blueish tint of zinc or chrome nickel does tend towards a yellow hue.

They are brass for sure. Polished one the other day and where the plating is gone the brass shinned nicely. Hmmm....wonder how i could touch them up. Will zinc plate to the none plated areas on the brass?
