I suspect you are using too high a plating current and perhaps for too long a time. It would be helpful to know some details.
In my experience, a good result is characterized by a smooth dull blue-gray surface. I pull the part out of the bath if it starts to turn black or furry. Then I shine it up and sometimes replate it. It is better to do several "light" coats (short time, lower current) than one long, high current coat.

spokesThank you thank you for the response. I am using power supply I had from Radio Shack it has adjustable outlet and I am using the 3v output. With the multimeter on it I am getting about 3.25v. I tried the next one up 5v in the beginning but it seemed too high. I can try the battery charger I think the voltage it quite low on it. I will check. Maybe the amps are causing me grief. Doesn't seem like the lenght of time is the issue because it turns blackish pretty quick which would lead me to think your first comment on too high voltage. There is starting to get little chucks or blackish zinc deposits in the bath, is that common? Seems I have to do more work cleaning and shinning than I did before it went into the bath, but it does look good. I have read about the battery charger I will test it and see what happens and report back. Thanks Wilf
