What I did with my classic 305 Honda today

Post by Snakeoil » Thu Apr 04, 2013 6:41 pm

On the Triumphrat Vintage and Classic forum, a gent there started a thread like this, only with Triumph in place of the words 305 Honda. It's become a social thread where folks who just want to chat about what they did that day with their bike will post. I have to say that the forum is as much a group of friends as it is an enthusiast site. And, this thread has taken on a life of its own.

So, I thought I'd give it a shot here and see what happens. Worst case is it dies a natural death.

Today, I took my CL77 for the first spin of the season. After spending more than a day yesterday and the day before, looking for electrical gremlins and finding none, I replaced the plug wires, put the battery in her and fired her up. Took her to the local bike shop for her annual inspection. I flogged her hard all there way there and all the way back and she ran like a raped ape. The spring Motogiro is coming up in a month so I'll be trying to ride her as much as I can and weed out any latent gremlins... if any are left. I'm guessing that the gremlins have grey hair by now, too.

regards,
Rob

Well, this was actually done last saturday, and although my memory is not as sharp as it used to be, I still have the memories:

Waking up early on Saturday, the weather was promissing to be about 50. perfect for the unvailing of the Dream. Pulled out the battery that was left on the maintainer most of the winter, put ins some high test and watched with dismay the leaky petcock. Guess it needs to swell up a bit. After an hour the draining $3.90 per gallon nectar stopped the seapage enough to give it a shot. I kicked her over about 4 times and she fired nicely and had a nice idle. Since I got these cool goggles from my wife from Christmas to go over my spectacles, I had to done the whole outfit. Off and down the driveway and off on a 5 mile ride. She never missed a beat and the goggles worked great. Kinda forgot to do the basics like, drain/change the oil, check the pressure on the tires and check over some of the key bolts and nuts. Maybe I should double check to see that the wife got the registration and insurance. I was just happy she started. Yes I probably should get over to the local bike shop this year and put an inspection sticker on her. Can't wait until the next 50 degree day and maybe put 10 miles on the old girl. :)

Since our '64 Dream 305 is all disassembled and being restored, I can't regale you all about a fun ride (luckily my '74 Cb750 K4 is running fine), but I did get the brake shoes out of the plates and cleaned all the parts. There are so few things left to do before reassembly, I can taste it: the head is in transit to Emo; the covers and frame parts need to be blasted and painted; the tank needs to be sealed; the wheels need new spokes and polishing. Once that's done and I order a few more parts I have on a spreadsheet, I can put it all back together. I think it just might be done by the end of August!

Had: '75 CB550 K, '79 CT90
