Speedometer mystery

Post by Terry McKitrick » Sun Apr 15, 2007 12:04 pm

I am restoring a 1966 CP77. I purchased a type II speedo on Ebay, and it does not work.
The drive from the front wheel turns in a clockwise direction when the wheel is rolling forward..
When I put a reversible drill on the cable and turn it counter-clockwise, the speedo works fine.
The front wheel is mounted so that the brake is on the left, speedo drive on the right, when sitting on the bike. I have looked at numerous photos on the net, and this seems to be the case for all years.

The speedo drive was on the bike when I purchased it, so I am not sure if it is original or not, but it does appear to be. Is there anything inside it that can be put in backwards? Do I have the wrong type of speedometer? I'm stumped.

(Yes, that is my correct serial number. It has to be the only one in the world that matches the model number).

Cable correct for your bike, lubed and not binding? Are you sure the speedo drive is ok and not failng under load conditions. Are you sure the cable ends are making proper contact and not spinning inside the speedometer end conncection and /or the speedo drive thus not causing it to work..Are you road testing it with the cable on or just spinning it jacked up?Just my two cents.

I asume you took a TYPE 1 speedo off the bike and are trying to use a TYPE 2.
The type 2 uses a different front wheel drive.
It looks tha same from the outside but turns the cable drive in a different direction than the early (TYPE 1).
If you watched closely as you rode the bike the speedo needle sort of jumps.
That's because the cable is turning in the wrong direction.
As you do have a unusual bike I sort of wonder why ya want to use the TYPE 2 speedo. ..............lm

speedo

This appears to be an OOPS on my part. My bike did not have a speedo when I purchased it. I checked the pictures on the 305 site, and the speedos earlier than 1965 were Type I so I thought Type II was the one I wanted. It does work just fine, if only I can get it turning the other way.
Looks like my options are:
1. Find the correct hub.
2. Find an adaptor that will reverse the rotation, or modify the hub I have.
3. Flip the front wheel around. (If it works, this is the easy way out). Anybody out there ever tried this?
Thanks for the good advice and quick responses Joe and Mouse. Much appreciated.

Thanks for your replies. I couldn't find the proper hub, and didn't want to go looking for another speedo, so I turned the wheel around. My apologies to the purists who want everything "correct", but this has been a year long project, and I really wanted to get riding.

It worked! I now have a speedo (the cable just reached), no difference in braking. As soon as I finish wiring everything up and putting it back together, I will send in some photos.
