Casting artifacts or serious cracks?

Post by catterar » Sat Oct 13, 2012 12:18 pm

I just pulled the left case cover and found what appears to be cracks in the case. Are these serious or are they just casting artifacts?

These lines on your cases seem to be casting artifacts, also discussed earlier. Some cases have these lines more then others, apparently depending on which production line these were produced.

I believe that these artifacts, commonly referred to as wrinkles in the bullet casting world, are from the temperature of the molds being a bit cooler than the should be.

They had me worried when I first saw them. I tried to search for info on the forum but did not find anything. I guess I didn't use the correct querry.
The day had already started out bad, a PO had welded the shift pedal to the shift spindle and I had to grind that off. I did find out why they had welded it most of the splines were worn off the spindle. Not the way I would have fixed it, but there is not accounting for some people.

Casting Lines

My 67 S90 engine cases have them on the left side in the countershaft sprocket area. First time I saw them I thought the case was damaged and that oil would be cascading out soon! Well, that's over 11 years ago and no leaks. This forum is great. I didn't know about the frequency or causes but you learn something every time you visit.
