Turning back speedometer miles

I had to replace the speedo when I first bought the bike. The new odometer has twice as many miles on it as the original. Is there an easy way to turn the miles back to the correct miles that match my title? It's working just fine so I'm nervous about breaking it trying to fix the miles. Any easier options that opening it up? Is it that complicated? Any advise would be appreciated!

Hi Kigsby

If you search on here for speedo repair you will find out how to take it apart. It's not the easiest of things to do but once you are inside, resetting the odometer is easy(ish).

When you are inside you will see this clip which holds the odometer drum in.....

Might be easier just to wind it forwards with an electric drill.........

Thanks G - I think I'm going to try to figure out if I can use a drill in reverse some how (the Ferris Bueller fix!) and if that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to open it up. While I'm in there I know I'll be tempted to start cleaning it up and that's when I'll break it! Thanks again for your help.

Don't bother with the drill. It would take a month of 24/7 running to get it to zero.

Agreed - a bit of a stupid suggestion. You'd probably wear out the input bearings in the process, too...

Just worked it out - 60 days at 70mph to go once around the clock.......... :-)
