305 Scrambler CL77 Removing Bushings and rubber parts

Post by Dickj » Fri Sep 16, 2011 11:09 am

I'm restoring my 1966 305 Scrambler CL77.

How do I remove the bushings from my swing arm so I can get it powdercoated? I understand the batch ovens at 400 degrees will destroy any rubber elements. (shock mounts)

Also the triple clamp has a rubber piece where it slides into the steering post of the frame. I don't know how to go about removing it without damaging it. I would like to get that piece powdercoated as well.

How do I take apart the rear shocks? I removed the coil springs but the shock bodies have lots of rust and it would like to get them re-chromed[/u][/i][/b]

Dick

You need to make up a puller using a long bolt and a pair of bushes. One which is the same as the inside diameter of the bushes and one which has in inside diameter the same as the OD of the bush. Assemble them together and wind a nut / washer onto the bolt and the bush will be drawn into the outer sleeve.

The bottom race of the steering bearings can be carefully removed with a drift, by tapping all around it from below. Once the bearing is removed the rubber washer and large flat washer will be released.

Dismantling the rear shocks depends upon whether they are crimped together or screwed. If they a threaded the top is usually slotted. Make a tool for this and drill out the two parts of the top of the shock which are punched into the slots. You can unscrew the top and then withdraw the innards. Take care pulling the components out as oil will go everywhere. I made a puller for my CB77 shocks.

Good Luck!

This is one I made for the front suspension fibre bush on Dreams. I made a similar one for the rubber bush.

Undo the slotted cover, then pull the inner parts free from the body. They are pretty tight.

Once you have the damper internals out, you can either reuses as is or dismantle further to replace the seals.
