Silk thread gaskets?

Post by Dana01 » Wed Feb 02, 2011 5:27 pm

Lycoming (aircraft engines) runs 2 parallel strips of silk thread on top of the their very thin layer of gasket cement when assembling crankcase halves ("How it's made").

Has anyone tried this? I do like the idea of the added oil leak-stoppage.

case sealing

On our race motors we would deburr the cases and then employ a lapping plate and compound to make sure that the mating surfaces would match correctly. Hylomar or Yamabond was all that was necessary to build an oil tight motor. Cleaning of the cases was a critically important step as well. allan
