This is an edit of my original reply. No you cannot plate zinc to brass. It will plate, but won't stick. Discovered that today when I tried to plate a brass sidecover latch ring.

I measured the pH of my new and old bath with my hot tub testing kit. Trouble is vinegar has a pH of about 2.4 and the test kit only goes to 6.0. The strip was definitely below the range of the kit for both baths. But being a logrithmic type of scale, 4 points is a huge range.

Nobody here with an old chemistry set in the attic? Maybe my wife can find some pH paper in the dental office. I know I had some at one time, but who knows where I put it "so it would be safe when I needed to use it".

Homer Simpson

As a follow-up, I was on the Buchanan's site yesterday looking at goodies. They do offer carbon steel, stainless steel, brass and aluminum nipples. I suspect some of the applications are for auto wheels since they were normally painted.

Not all Honda spokes are nickle plated brass

Post by Snakeoil » Wed Dec 22, 2010 12:16 pm

I just pulled about the two wheels on my '67 CL77. Turns out my nipples are not brass base metal. They are steel. I was cleaning them and did not see any brass in the threaded hole so I touched them with a magnet and they stuck. So in this case, I would guess that they are zinc or cad plated steel.

Zoom, check yours with a magnet. They could be nickle plated which would require a brass or copper base plate first.

regards,
Rob
