Got More Info

Post by uadmlj1 » Thu Dec 09, 2010 10:12 am

Thanks Mouse, you are right about the original tire size according to the owners manual. I also received the following info: The original tires fitted to the 1966 CL77 Honda was called a
"trials universal". The tires are a block style tread that has acceptable performance on the road as well as off-road.

The tires on my bike are of that style, but are probably dangerously old. They may pre-date the Internet as I can't find any reference to the manufactures. And I can't find any manufacturer that makes 19" tires of that style in the right size.

Well without checking and using my memory (at times not always correct) I'll share what I think is correct.
All CL72 bikes were issued with DUNLOP TRIALS tires. (may have had UNIVERSAL there somewhere also)
The CL77 from 1965 to 1966 also used them.
1967 bikes came with BRIDGESTONE on one area and UNIVERSAL TRAILS 180 across and some of them (POSSIBLY THE LAST RUN) had WHITE lettering.
Contrary to some myths these bikes when issued by HONDA "DID NOT HAVE K-70 TREAD". ...............lm

1967 was possibly the year BRIDGESTONE ceased making bikes and only produced tires???????

Everyone's A Little Bit Right

Look what I found:

I found several companies that make a 'trails' tire, none 19"

The Shinko SR241 looks very close. They do a 2.75X19 and a 3.50X19.

Do a search for tires. Husabob put Shinkos on is CL with stock rims. He actually tried a 3.50 on the front but had to take the fender off. I think he had that tire for sale. He's a member here.

He rode that bike in the Motogiro last spring, which was on dirt and paved roads and said the tires performed very well. He thought they might be a little squirrelly on the pavement because the rubber compound seemed a little soft. But he said that did not turn out to be the case.

Like I said, do a search for CL tires and you'll find it.
regards,
Rob
