Powder coating spoked rims

Post by kneewall49 » Fri Feb 20, 2009 11:19 pm

Just new to the forum, looks like a valuable resource.

Just a couple of questions to begin, I want to have black rims on my c90 and wondering what's the best way to go?
  • Paint or powder coat. I'll like to use the original rims that are rust pitted. After I have them back to good metal I presume I could do either, but I'd imagine that paint wouldn't be so durable and possibly get damaged just putting the tires back on?
  • But if the rims were powder coated, would it make the spokes harder to fit, ie would the rim spoke holes be reduced? Would the powder coating crack while relacing?
Thanks[/code]

kneewall49, I had a set of rims powder coated for my cafe racer project. They were rusty like yours ,but after sand blasting looked great and the powder coat had a good finish to stick to. It didn't seem to affect the spoke holes as it went back together fine. Kustommusic

I do it all the time. No issues whatsoever. You will have to chisel it off and no it won't crack. The holes will close a bit, drill them out or do it by hand with a drill bit in a tap handle. It is that simple.

....all assuming you have a powder coater that knows what they are doing.
