1966 305 scrambler gearing1966 305 scrambler gearingHi, I just purchased a 1966 Scrambler 305 in almost new condition and I am very happy. It is a great bike and I would like to ride it to work every day, about a seven mile drive on the freeway, and it seems geared very low. I would like to know if there is any way to make my bike more highway friendly. My rear sprocket is stamped 40 so I assume it is a 40 tooth gear. I have not checked my front sprocket yet. Maybe a set of sprockets and chain for the weekdays and a different set for weekend rides? If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
Re: 1966 305 scrambler gearingBurns, Welcome to the forum! It sounds like your on the right track. From what I know about it, other years CL's had 38 tooth rears. That is what I replaced my '67 CB sprocket with. It had a 34 on it and my '65 CB had a 32 0n it. Any of those would interchange to your CL. You would have chain length issues though. It might be easier to look at your front sprocket.and go up a tooth there. I have seen those available in 13-14-15. It might be the way to go. Good luck! Let us know how you come out, Steve Greer
Re: 1966 305 scrambler gearingSteve, Thanks for the info. I am looking into geting the stock CB sprockets. For now I will stick to side streets and avoid the freeway. I really love this bike. This is a great forum as well, I have learned alot about these bikes in a very short time. Thanks to this site and helpful people like yourself, Jason
