gearbox rotation

Post by desmo » Sat Oct 01, 2011 5:25 pm

hi everyone, any thought welcome. in the process of restoring a cl72,the engine is out, seized pistons & barrells removed, oil pump out, clutch basket & primary chain removed. i havn,t split the cases yet.
The question is after restoring quite a few difrent bikes the gearbox does not rotate backwards i have never really noticed on previous jobs, it feels like a sprag clutch, it makes no diffrence if it,s in a gear or neutral, the kickstart shaft rotates ok & drives the mainshaft. can this be normal? i think not,but everything looks ok,i can see into the box & gears loo ok, it means if in gear with the cluth pulled in you couldn,t move the bike backwards!!

That doesn't sound right. Sounds like you need to split the cases and investigate further. There is a crowded roller bearing between the kickstart shaft and the mains haft. Maybe that is breaking up. Ether that or one of the other two ball bearings is breaking up, but you can see both of those from the outside.

Let us know what you find.

Where are you in UK?
