correct gear ratios ?

It should go 50 miles an hour in second gear. While it's apart see if you can verify that it is actually shifting into the higher gears. Check the centering spring on the shift spindle, if the center pin is bent or the spring is deformed the mechanism won't be in place to grab the next gear.

The taller rear tire would make the bike rev lower, not higher. Bigger diameter = more distance per revolution.......

Mike, I checked the number of shaft rotations in each gear position and the results seem to match G-Man's chart information, but I will check that shift spindle tomorrow.

G-Man, that makes sense about the tire size, I guess if nothing else comes to light on this I can put a smaller sprocket on the rear. Woody

I just got back to working on the engine following a long cold spell. I did check the shift spindle and it looks fine. Shifted the trans through all of its gears and it sure appears to be working properly. Unless anyone has a another sugestion, I guess I will put everything back together and maybe go for a smaller rear sprocket. Woody
