Removing Kickstarter Housing

Post by mason123h » Thu Aug 15, 2013 4:16 pm

Right now I am working on removing the right side transmission cover on a 1964 CA78 so that I can replace the clutch cable.
I have everything around the cover removed except for the kickstarter housing that protrudes past the cover and prevents it from coming off. Any idea how that comes off? I think there may be some type of compressed ring, but my tech manual has all older model info.
Also, I've heard people say something about being able to replace the cable through a rubber cover on the side cover of a CA78 without taking off the metal cover. Is that true? There is a pretty big rubber piece on the side of my bike, but I always thought that it was just to keep your foot from rubbing.

Thanks for the help!

Access to clutch lifter thread

The rubber plug on the right side case does give you access to the clutch lifter thread so you can replace the clutch calble without removing the right side cover.
If you want to remove the right side cover, remove the right side muffler, right side front foot peg and the rear brake pedal. Then remove the stator cover, 3 screws. Then remove the 8 (I think) remaining screws that hold the right side cover on. The kick starter is attached to a splined shaft and does not need to be removed from the right side cover. Just rock the kick starter as you pull the cover off. Be careful, the kick starter is under spring tension and will uncoil once it clears the shaft, so make sure you have a good grip on it.
Hope this helps.

With all the screws removed, pulling the clutch lever in should start the cover off.
