clutch plates c(cb)72,76

Post by WD46 » Thu May 11, 2006 5:31 am

Hello folks , back on the site again , had to make a new acount though.
It's been a while , must say this Forum looks a LOT better than the old..(Okay that wasn't realy a FORUM)
I've got a question about my dear old C72 which i had restored something like 10 years ago.
No E-bay those days , that's why i installed the best clutchplates i could get. Which was some Corky-looking NOS material.
Since day one always had problems with the clutch.
I doesn't like to release fully , whatever i try.
And when the engine gets hotter it gets even worse. it gets even harder to
stay in first gear with the clutch fully pulled.
it wants to creap forward.
Have tried everything , but i think it has to do with the plates , and the oil.
I do use old fashioned mineral oil specially for honda.
Now for the question.
I heard from different channels that clutch plates from some more recent models can be used.
Does anyone know which models?
For instance , is it possible to use GB500 plates?
thanks in advance!
If you want to see a picture of the bike, go to

It's in Dutch , but hé its about the pictures :D

Cheers!

I bought a set of the fiber only (corky looking) disks last year for my Dream and noticed that when I installed the first disk that is held on by the spring clip it was sandwiched in pretty tight between the two metal disks and was very tight and almost did not get the spring clip on and it was very hard to turn by hand. I had more problems than with old disks so I took apart and put one of the old fiber disks on first instead then rest of the new ones on.I had adjusted my clutch till I was blue in the face and no amount of clutch lever helped the isssue. I use only NAPA 30w non-detergent oil which is not supposed to foam like new detergent oils.I have had no sticking with this set-up.I think with the the first disk being so tight it was causing the problem and acted like all the disks may be sticking.Thats my theory on the issue, but I'm pretty new at this. You may want to pull the clutch pack and see if that first disk is tight or not.

Mabey a dumb question,,,, Are you guys adjusting the clutch lifter on the right enging cover (the big screw head w/lock nut) or just the clutch cable and fine tuner at the handlebar? If so there is the problem. I'm also told you can discard the wire snap ring in the clutch housing. I did and mine works fine though I didn't have any trouble to begin with. Q. are you using old or new style discs? please tell me your not mixing them!! Steve

No I did not mix old and new style. And yes I adjusted the rod adjuster along with the fine and lever adjuster. I probably should of left the snap ring off and the inner disk would not of been so tight with the new disk and would not of hung up.I was experimenting last summer when I was just learning how these animals worked and now that I have more knowledge I may mess around again with it if I get board.I was told to leave the ring on so I did.

Honda has issued at least 4 differeit disc and I have 4 differently spaced wire area center parts. The oldest doesn't even have grooves for the wire and the next 3 have different spacing for the wires. When I rebuild a engine I make sure it has the last issue clutch parts. Never a problem then. ..........lm

Mouse can you give out the part number you use for the disks? Also, I was reading the yahoo site about the cam chain and you said(I think this is you Ed?) you put a master link in the cam chain. What # link is needed and are they readily available?I have not attempted a rebuild yet but, would like to down the road when my old engine starts to go. Joe

Link is HONDA 14411-259-000 and is available for around $3.50 each.
The disc is 22201-MK2-000 and has a little less friction area than the last issue before it which was 22201-268-020. .....................lm
