Does play in the gear shift spindle = shifting problems?

Post by allthumbs » Wed Apr 29, 2009 4:57 pm

I have trouble shifting all of a sudden. Got stuck in first, shut down the motor and found neutral. started her up again, shifted up to 2nd and started home. mostly because once in first while running I could not shift out of it. from second I could hit 3rd and 4th to get home, down shifting was a bear.

i took the case off and everything seems clean except lots of play in the spindle 24610-259-030

Also, the gear change arm 24711-268-030 has begun to strip out due to the spindle not spinning.

Does anyone know if there is supposed to be lots of play on the spindle? or what might the problem be?

I appreciate the help

D

one other thing, I put the case back on yesterday and went around the block. shifted fine for a minute, then a no good, would not shift down to 1st. had to rev up 2nd to get it home.

I think I heard a grind, not sure, It just seems as though the spindle won't turn. got to be related to a bigger problem.

When I got it home I turned it off and shifted from 1st to neutral with no trouble.

Not being an expert mechanic, I like to have an idea what to look for when I start taking the clutch out and going further. otherwise I'm just fishing around in there.

Sounds like fishing around is exactly whats required. You're gonna have to remove clutch, and inspect gear change parts. If all is in order, it may be internal, bent shift fork etc.
