Chain Pitch, Splines, Models, etc...

Post by mountain_grim » Tue Oct 14, 2008 8:56 pm

This is my first post actually requesting a discussion. I have researched this sight as well as vintage Honda with out finding the exact information I am needing.

I have a 1967 honda CA77 currently undergoing restoration. I am trying to find a new front and rear drive sprocket as well as a chain. I can get the rear sprocket 29-34 teeth with 520 pitch from rebel gears or sprocket specialties. Neither company would make the front I wanted (or any other front for that particular model. I guess what I need to know is, will the splines from any other models match up for the front and rear sprockets? Does anybody know where I could get a 15T front sprocket in 520 for my CA77?

Thanks for the help.

I was able to get a 15t , 520 for a CB77 from sprocket specialties. I beleive this should also work on a CA. LM may be able to confirm this.

Sprockets aplenty on eBay, guys. You just need to research the combination for your particular model for the correct tooth count. I think you'll find that the output shaft splines are the same on all 72/77 models. LM will confirm yae or nae, I'm sure.

I have seen many on ebay, but most seem to be 625 or 530. I am narrowing my search because I prematurely got my hands on a rear sprocket and chain in 520. If I can find a front in 520, that will save me some buying/selling time that I would rather spend in the garage.

Thanks for all the help so far. From photos I have seen, it does seem that the splines on the front sprockets are similar between model variations of the 305.

Funny, what made me want to do it was that I had a new chain and front sprocket in 520!

Davo, please enlighten me, as I'm obviously revealing my poor education surrounding sprocket sizing; what's the significance of the 3-digit number? And I'll bet I'm not the only one here!

Steve generaly speaking, the more horsepower and torque you have , the larger chain that you need. A drawback is that the larger chain is heavier, and it is rotational weight, so it's a good spot to shave weight to increase performance. My 50 horsepower dirt bike uses a 520 chain, so I figured my 28 HP Superhawk would be fine with it, rather that the too large 530 stamdard set-up. Here's a good link to info on chain sizing.
