Starter Clutch helpStarter Clutch helpLast year I bought my 66 Dream and I really love it. One of the thing I like the most is tinkering with it. Recently I've noticed that the starter clutch is beginning to slip. I've researched on this forum and the internet as a whole and have been unable to locate a proper tutorial on how to disassemble the starter clutch with pictures. I contacted a local guy who works on vintage motorcycles and he quoted me about 120 bucks to service the starter clutch if I provide all the springs, followers, and rollers. This seems reasonable but I think I'd get so much satisfaction doing it myself. I consider myself to be a decent shade tree mechanic but I'm afraid to go in there blind. Anyone have any advice or a resource that I'm not finding?
Pretty straightforward. You need to pull the alternator rotor off the end of the crank and then remove the stator. The starter clutch is at the back of the alternator. You will need a puller which screws into the alternator rotor an this is just a large metric bolt. On some bikes the rear wheel spindle fits.
