Fork bolt dent question???

Post by fab60 » Wed Jun 25, 2014 7:28 pm

So I finally was able to get the darn sliders off the fork, it was a big pain the arse. Anyway I was wondering since I was not able to remove the sliders easily, there must be an obstruction/ dent on the inside fork like others have experienced. My question is if I re-used the bottom slider without reversing the dent, what does this do to the travel of the fork? Will installing the sliders prevent the forks from a full rebound after compression while riding? Bushings still look good and are not knackered.

OK, what bike? sounds like early CB. yes the sliders can be deformed by forcing a too long bolt in the fender stay. It can be filed out if you know what you are doing.
Good luck

Fab60

I managed to get a small dremel bit in mine but cannot remember whether that was a CB or CL slider.

The answer as Randy said is to file off the 'pip' inside as it makes reassembly difficult and may restrict movement a little.

The fact that you got the slider off suggests that the problem is not too bad. In extreme circumstances I have carefully drilled right into the slider but you then have to remember to seal the fender bolt on re-assembly.

Judging by your spelling of "arse" you have not been in the USA all your life..... :-)

Cheers

out of range

had the same problem with my bike...once assembled the tight spot appears to be well out of the range of fork travel, have had no problems with it.

Thanks guys! I will try to file that spot if possible. However when I did look down into the barrel I could hardly see any obstruction. Maybe the tolerances are really tight between bushing and slider.

You may have smoothed it out a little in pulling the slider off.

Hey Gman, I tried reinstalling one of the sliders on the forks. It went in rather smooth until it hit that spot near the bolts would be. I was thinking if I can get the seal holder to get close to the threads and just tight them up this should be ok?? What I found on the other slider that was more difficult to pop off was that looking inside there wasn't a bump either from long screws. However I did see some small tiny metal balls along the walls on the inside.....looks like from welding bits that might have fallen in while they were making the slider??
