Oil Filter

Post by MinnesotaDreamer » Sat Aug 03, 2013 3:38 pm

Hi guys - I have a 63 305 Dream I'm bringing back to life. With my oil change I decided to clean the oil filter as well (good thing I did as there was some sludge collected in there). When I removed the filter the chain that drives it obviously came off and now I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it back on. I found this:

She had the same issue, but in her case the opening under the filter cover appears to be much larger, so I could see how you'd have room to maneuver to get the chain back on. On mine, the opening is only as large as the filter (just barely), so there's no way you can hold the chain and still slide the filter back in, much less get it back on the sprockets.

Appears to me the only way is to remove the whole case - what am I missing? Any guidance greatly appreciated.

You will need to remove the case.
You have the early issue with the smaller hole. ...lm

Thanks Loud Mouse for the quick response, I was afraid of that.

I have a later model parts bike with the wider oil filter opening. I popped the case off that one and it appears (to me at least) to be identical except for the oil filter opening and that it could be exchanged for my older one. That would save me from having to repeat this case removal procedure each time I clean the filter in the future.

Any problems you guys see with that? Thanks again...

The only thing to consider is to change it you will not have the correct part for your bike year.
They work the same so if it doesn't matter if the part isn't correct Do It. .....lm

Thanks again Loud Mouse, I'm going to swap those cases, prefer not to go thru this process again in the future. Funny how it works with these old bikes - after a long process getting the bike together I (thought I) was down to an oil change before I could ride. Then I have the great idea to clean the oil filter and open another can of worms!

Just as an aside - it was amazing to me the difference in condition the bikes were internally. Inside the case of my rider there was very little oil on the sides/top of the case and a fairly thin layer of thicker oil coating the bottom. The parts bike had a thick layer of dark black oil covering the entire case and thick sludge on bottom - almost looked like it had been painted black inside and took gasoline to get it all off. Just thankful my rider was not that dirty inside.

You will find that over the years some bikes/engines were well tuned and maintained.
Then there are the ones which were ignored in those areas and show it even after all these years.
I am never amazed at what I find when I open one of these engines as I've seen some real doozies!
Keep having fun. .........lm
