Quick Tip

Post by britman » Sun Feb 22, 2009 2:14 pm

On my latest project I used the Type II aluminum forks from a parts bike that were in decent shape and not leaking when I did the transfer. I had replacement fork seals on hand but elected to take a chance. I think most of us have a task when doing a rebuild that they detest, mine is fork seals. I don't know if it is the mess or the usual pain in the butt of trying to remove the old seals and seating the new ones that put it at the bottom of fun things list. After I had everything done, I noticed the tell tale little drip on the slider. I use ATF in the forks so I drained them overnight, pumped them dry and tightened the retaining rings on both sides. Then I refilled the forks with ATF with seal refresher and guess what, dry as a bone. I know this may be a temporary fix and I will still have to replace the seals in the future, but I am going to see how long this lasts. Just FYI to anyone who has just a slight weeping problem.
