Oil Debate

Post by britman » Fri Feb 08, 2008 8:09 pm

Let's see if we can get the age old debate started again. What is the best type oil to run in these older machines. I have been running Castrol 20-50 in my old Triumphs for years and had really good results. I am still undecided on the my CL77. I can still locate Non Detergent 30 Weight if I want to be truly old school, but I have also read that the multi grades with the lower numbers (IE 5-30/10-30wgt) tend to give more lubrication protection on start ups. I run synthetic in my 2005 Triumph Rocket III, so I am all over the spectrum. Someone convince me which road to take. By the way after cleaning the oil filter in my Scrambler, I can tell you it does work.

interesting website "all about oil" Might give you some interesting thoughts. I run my CB77 on W80, a grade of aircraft engine oil and have done so for years. no problems at all and motor is still very clean inside.
Leon.

I have been a heavy equipment technician all my life. Helped rebuild a Cummins diesel engine at the age 14 and by 18 totally on my own with diesel mechanics and I am now 44 years young. On the makes and models that I am familiar with I can pretty much diagnose those engines over the phone being that I evolved with them through the years. That being said: I have followed this form for over a year and know that LOUD MOUSE has been born and raised on these 305’s and we are lucky he is willing to share his wealth of knowledge. Non-detergent straight 30 is the way to go. NAPA if possible (as recommended by LOUD MOUSE)

Just my two cents on this never ending debate………………………
