this is the piece i am talking about. should it be able to be removed? you can see that it is in between the oil seal and the o-ring.

i would really like to be able to hammer on that part to get the seal out. i have tried to gently pry the seal out, but i am afraid i will jack the metal and score the walls.

Someone has put an extra seal in there. There should be nothing other than metal between the o-ring and the seal. You will have to pry it out or cut it.

There is not a second seal In there. It goes, from the top, oil seal, metal piece with a ridge, o-ring. Does the metal piece come out?

The metal is part of the seal holder. The seal rests on it. I thought I could see an extra seal in your photo but it is just the metal of the seal holder.

From your picture, working from the bottom, I can see.

Threads
O-ring
Flange - part of seal holder
Seal

There should be a wire clip on the other side of the seal. Remove that and then you can tap the seal out upwards (away from the threaded part). Do not hit the metal flange - just the seal beyond it.
