New wheels for my CB77
You can certainly put the Avons on the stock width rims, I mounted a set like that last year. With the narrower width dimension, the tires will have a more rounded profile than with the recommended wider rims. You will find that the Avons are noticeably heavier than the standard configuration tires that you probably have. If you're getting new rim strips, make sure they're narrow enough, seating in the channel of the rim, not on the flat area adjacent to the rim flanges. The wider bead of the Avons may catch on it, preventing the tire from seating properly. Also check for tire clearance issues. The front of the rear fender may have to be bent slightly outward, and you might have to deflate the front tire for clearance when installing it past the front fender mounts on the forks. Regards, Chase
I have just put the same size Avons on my 400f which also has 1.60 front and 1.85 rear rims.
I had problems getting the tyre bead to seat properly, I put this down to the tyres being tubeless and the beads being a tighter fit to seal without tubes. Don't use the 60's Honda pressures, these modern tyres have a more flexible sidewall and will feel unstable on low pressures. The slight pinching caused by the narrow rim causes the tyre to wear flatten the centre of the tread and can feel strange before the tyre has worn fully. 1977 CB400F
