CB77 Front Fork & Rear Shock Disassembly

Very cool. So I have a couple of questions:

1. Did you primer first?
2. If so, how long did you wait before you applied the layer of black paint?
3. How many layers of black paint and clear coat did you use?

As of now, I've been waiting for coat to cure up to a week like the instructions on the can recommend. Though a few paint shops I've contacted said they can have the parts back in 4 days. So it sounds to me like you might not have to wait so long. Sorry if the questions seem obvious.

Right now I have one session (2-4 layers) of black paint on my chain guard, and I'm wondering if I should just move on to clear coat now.

Here's a picture and how I did it. I tipped the bike back on the frame and covered the base with plastic (not in picture). I masked the top , the chrome trim ring, the steering lock, the Honda Motors plate on the frame and the frame number, the steering tensioner on the bottom. I wrapped the center chrome sleeve in computer paper and slid it under the outer sleeve.

I did the lower aluminum first, then covered these with plastic bags after they dried. then did the black. It wasn't hard to paint this way, it just took time to mask it off.

I'm no expert, but just following the instructions on the can. We must be both using the Dupli-Color because it sounds like the same instructions. How I read it, you can put on coats in 10 minutes up to an hour. If it sits more then an hour, you wait 7 days for it to cure before additional coats. I have been kind of following this, but not to the letter. I am going to follow this for the clear coat so I don't mess up the finish below it.

On bare metal I primered first with 2 or 3 coats of primer. The upper fork tubes were in good condition so I used a red 3-M pad to scuff the paint and painted black. I put on 3 coats of black, with about 10 minutes between coats. I plan to put a clear coat on but I am waiting the 7 days like the can says. I am sure I will put on at least 2 or 3 coats of clear.

If you have everything well covered with the black, and the finish looks nice, put on the clear.

There are many different types of paint, so you should stick to what the recommended application is for the paint your using. The shops do things to speed up the drying, so I wouldn't go by that.
