Probably depends on how much gap there is between the two. There was just enough in mine to allow the aluminum can thickness to be inserted. I didn't use the sealer type since I didn't want to fool with it each time I dis-assembled it. It is probably a better permanent type seal though.

I've used silicone caulk on British pipes with similar clearance issues. Works pretty good at these kind of temperatures. Easy to apply too.
