I too started out as a motor mechanic in the early 60's at a manufacturers dealership, back then cheap labour/expensive parts we were taught to clean and repack bearings but they were also prone to wear, none were sealed and always had a separate replaceable seal. Now in modern times expensive labour/cheap parts the norm is to replace, most bearings are available fully sealed to no seals. The fully sealed are just that, packed with the correct type and amount of modern grease all done in a clinical clean environment.
