Swingarm clearance

OK, I've gotten to the point of doing a dry run assembly of the rear wheel on my 1965 CL77.

It looks as though I have all the correct parts in their appropriate place of assembly but when I slide the axle through the entire assembly, I still have about 1/4" space between the inner swingarm faces. I have not tightened up the axle nut yet but the cotter pin holes appear to be in the correct location with the castle nut when only finger tight.

Is this amount of extra gap normal? If I tighten up the axle nut until the gap is gone, the cotter pin holes on the axle will be beyond the castle nut. Should I make a new LH axle spacer to make up the 1/4" gap???

I can post pix if someone needs to see what I'm describing.

Here are the pics I took of the RH and LH of the rear wheel assembly.
Please keep in mind this is just a trial fit-up and some sprocket/chain adjuster hardware pieces are not ready to assemble yet but I believe all wheel and spacer parts are where they should be.

In the RH pics, looks like I have everything in place and I have pushed everything towards the RH side.

As you can see, there is a gap between the LH chain adjuster and the axle spacer of approx 1/4".

I must tell you that years ago, my original rear wheel and tire was stolen and I ran an 18" wheel and tire off another Honda bike and MAY have altered the spacer to get everything to fit.

Now that I have a year correct wheel and tire for a 1965 CL77, I'm thinking The difference in the two wheels may be the 1/4" that is now showing itself as a gap.

Looking at my parts manual, It also looks like the spacer shold have the larger diameter on both ends, not just the outer as shown.

If I tighten everything up to eliminate the 1/4" gap, I will put too much bind on the swing arm arms and force the axle nut to the bottom of the axle threads causing a NON alignment of the cotter pin hole with the nut.

I'm thinking I need to make (or acquire) a different axle spcer for the LH side.

Can anyone verify the width of an original 1965 CL77 Axle spacer??

Please measure both spacers. As this is a small brake you may have the wrong spacers all right.
