Stuck muffler defuser

Post by garncarz » Wed Dec 04, 2013 8:32 am

Does anyone have a tip for getting a stuck defuser out of a CA78 muffler. The left one slid right out. The right one won't budge and I am concerned about breaking the little tab across the end. Thanks.

Remove the fastening bolt.
Spray with penetrate fluid.
Tap on outer edge in a twisting direction back and forth with a punch.
Use plenty of fluid.
May need to punch it in a little but keep twisting as you add fluid. ........lm

Wisdom - but not pearls -

Penetrating oil or PB Blaster - soak for a long time

Heat from a heat gun or propane torch

Lots of oil and carbon build up - a torch will tend to burn some of it away -

However it ain't easy.

Remove muffler, insert 1" x 36" wooden dowel into end opposite defuser, tap with hammer. Voila!

Thanks.
