'67 Hawk Type II Fork Reassembly - Any tricks?

Post by dagersh » Fri Aug 17, 2012 7:28 pm

Hi Guys,

So, I got everything rebuilt on my forks. However, I cannot get the forks themselves back into the triples. The problem lies with the springs - they will not let me thread in the top screws.

What happens is, the forks compress and the springs are too stiff for one guy to compress them and thread in the top bolt.

Should I have taken the whole front end off of the frame?

Should I fill the forks with oil to gain resistance to them compressing? -Could be very messy...

As always, any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Gersh

Alright - I got it, but man what a PITA!

Basically, I reassembled the front end, including the fender. I then slid the whole assembly into the upper fork shrouds. My thought was to use my weight on the bike to get the top bolts to catch the fork legs. No go. So I then took an old bicycle spoke and fashioned a hook to grab the fork legs and riase them to the top triple. If you do this, make sure you are not fouling the threads of the fork legs. Anyway, it worked. 250cc's (ml's) of 10 Fork oil in each leg and the suspension works a charm.

Now, my horn and starter do not work!!!
