I found this question asked before, but not definitive answer- The CA has two different headers, one is about 3/4 to 1" longer than the other. Does the short one go on the left or right? From the wear on mine they've both been on both sides at one time or another. Both of mine have an "S" stamped on them, but no L or R.
From the look when mounted I think the short one is on the left, but I've got other exhaust problems that could deceive me.

Re: CA headers which is which? As I recall the long one is for the left side. ........lm
On my '66, the left pipe is stamped "L" and is longer than the right which is stamped "S" for "Shorter" See how it all makes sense? If both of yours are stamped "S" then that blows my theory. Just took off the right muffler to service the seals under the right side cover. I note that the right muffler is rubbing the lower chain case. I believe those are the two most expensive parts on that bike, making a hole in one another. I will try to bend something during reassembly.
I noticed that mine were awfully close together as well. Of course the front mount was gone, but with the rear snugged it would touch. I put a couple washers behind it to give it some clearance and fabricated the front mount accordingly. The pipe on that side has room to swivel without touching anything. Thanks lm. I put both mufflers in place and took some measurements from the cross shaft the foot pegs mount on. The left muffler sits slightly forward of the right, of course that may have something to do with my rebuilding the mount of the right side. I'll swap the headers and see how they fit. 63 CA78
