FORK TUBE DAMAGE - repair replace?

Post by M7 » Mon Sep 12, 2005 2:16 pm

Oh, I screwed up. After installing my new tires (Avon Roadrunners) I had to do a bit of massaging on the front fender brackets to fit the larger tire. I mistakenly bolted the brake arm to the fork tube with a longer bolt and apparently pushed the inside of the bolt hole into the shock. This has caused the front shock to stick in mid rebound. ouch.

I like having front suspension and I do not have it right now.

I'm currently attempting to disassemble the front fork to get inside and hopefully push the dent back out. has anyone come across this issue before? The dent is keeping the piston from pulling all the way out of the tube at this point. I don't want to damage the piston by forcing it past the dent.

A new fork tube from Ohio Cycle is 150.00 and I would perfer to avoid that charge - not to mention having to repaint the forks to match.

Accepting any and all suggestions or kicks in the rear end for doing such a stupid thing.

-M7

My experence is that you will have to KNOCK the slider off the tube.
This will cause all the inter rings that hold the bushings to be knocked out of their slots and be destroyed.
The slider itself is ruined already so you will need another slider and most of the internal parts.
I have the parts used here and have supplied 2 other fellers that did the same thing with parts to get their bike rideable.........

Fixed it!

I used a cutting wheel to remove the fender mount, then heated the tube to make the metal soft enough for the piston to pull out - then kept it heated and plunged the piston through to smooth out the dent that I created, then replaced the snap rings and re-welded the fender mount, finally painted the tube and reinstalled - works fine! The paint isn't great, but at least I'm back on the road using the new tires.

I will want to get another housing fro the future when I repaint professionally. Loudmouse, how much for a housing?

If this is for the steel CB72/77 sliders I need to know which side so I can check my stock.
Usually $25.00 plus shipping. .................emo
As I sit on the bike, it's the left tube. Steel version. I've heard that there are 2 different types of the steel version. I can provide the vin # if that will help. I'll also need the piston and c-clips and the ring (just to be thorough).

I'll try to get to the shop tomorrow and see if I have the left side. What is the frame number? The 1961 bikes had the unusual forks but if yours is a 62 to 65 I think you are OK. .................
