Gas flow

Okay I have a 1966 CA77 Dream, I have rebuilt the carb, correct float setting, rebuilt the petcock, the gas flows great from the tank when detached from the carb and draining into a gas can.

Initially it starts up fine, but once the fuel in the bowl is burnt then the bike dies, it doesn't replenish right away. Wait a few seconds and it fills again starts up. Any ideas?

Sounds like either there is something blocking the flow between the nipple on the carb and the float needle or possibly the float needle and seat are too small. Try removing the float bowl, and turning on the gas to see how it's flowing into the carb.

Does this bike have the banjo fitting on the carb like the CL? I know this can be problematic. Just my two-cents.

Mike, I don't think the CAs have the banjo with the screen like the CB CL bikes.

I pulled the bowl off and it seems to flow, okay. Don't have a banjo fitting. Is it possible to get an air bubble in the line? The filter never seems to fill up, there is gas in the upper line and in the lower line going into the carb but very little in the filter. I can't remember the float needle seat size (got it from Honda), guess I'll pull it back off and take a look.

Like I said earlier, the bowl fills up runs then quits when the bowl gas runs out. I quickly turn off the gas pull the bowl and it is low almost empty. Put it back on turn the gas on and it fills up within a few seconds. It must be the seat/needle?

Thanks for the help, I'd go out and look at it now but it is 102 outside, so maybe later tonight.

Could it be a plugged gas tank vent?
Not familar with CAs but CLs have a vent hole in the gas cap that can cause similar problems when plugged.

Sticky float valve?

I have actually resorted to polishing the inside of the valve seat and the sides of the valve itself after similar problems.

Did you add an extra in line filter? I sometimes wonder if that intereferes with the valve opening like it should.
