OK my base knowledge is about zero. I have a 1964 C72 which I am trying to get on the road. It has been running/firing really well off the first couple of kicks or first press of the starter after a new battery and chasing down some shorts in the harness. I've only had it running for a minute or so before I've killed it so that the fumes in the garage don't kill me!. I haven't had it out for a ride and today was to be the day. I noticed fuel running straight out the overflow so I popped off the clip to remove the bowl. I played with the float to free it up and put it back on and the problem was fixed. However when I flicked the clip off I didn't notice if it was seated in between the two lugs and the overflow moulding or if it sat towards the front of the bike from those two lugs. My guess is that I have to get it over the top of the lugs so it sits neatly in amongst the moulding - problem is I can't seem to get it there. I've had a go using a screwdriver to lever it over it but haven't put too much force into it as I don't feel like sourcing a new bowl if I break this one. Any tips or methods?
Now the main problem. I had the bike running for a short time and it went well for about 2 minutes before it started to cut back on the revs and then it died. It then didn't want to fire. I pulled out the plugs and they were a lovely shade of black, and wet too. I cleaned them off and same story but a bit shorter run time. A couple of other efforts resulted in nothing much except one huge back fire. I turned the air screw on the carby in and found it was about a 1/4 turn out only. I did some reading and found that they are meant to be 1 and 1/8th out. I plan to clean the carby out etc but was wondering if the air screw alone could gum up the plugs? I also noticed some spits of fuel coming out the exhaust. That was the extent of my ride - it was nice to get as far as the driveway I suppose. Guessing its running rich?

Carby Clip and black wet plugs
definately sounds like it's running rich. i'm no carb expert though.
the diagram can be found here : http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-c72_model743 ... t/E12.html the clip should be towards the front, with the 'u-bend' pointing towards the front. i'd guess if you're having this much difficulty you have it reversed ( u-bend to the rear). the clip should slide over the bowl with finger pressure, shouldn't need to pry it with a screwdriver. including a pic of the bottom of my ca77 carb. i don't believe it's identical, but i think the clip is located/turned in the same manner as yours. post us some pics please ! -smile-
Maysie, You need to remove your carb clean it up and reset it acording to your manual if you have one. If not, get one. It sounds like the float is out of adjustment or doesn't float any more or is hanging up on the side of the carb body. Its somthing that is allowing in a lot more fuel than you need. Also get some new plugs your old ones will not do the job now that they have been flooded so much. There is a start for you, you may find somthing else is wrong but your chances are the problem is in that area. Good Luck and let us know how you come out. Kustommusic
Thanks guys. I answered the first question myself when I took the Carby off today and had a decent look. The low speed jet was clogged and I cleared it out with a single strand from a wire brush. I then gave the bowl and body a clean with a toothbrush and some wire wool. Overall there wasn't much in it and it all seems to be in pretty good order. Have reassembled it and mounted it back on the bike with the air screw in the (hopefully) right position and now just wating for a nine month old to wake up so I don't wake him up when I kick the bike over.
