running rough

Post by bigdog » Sun May 11, 2008 11:23 pm

I have a 1964 CL72. I've spent the last year restoring it. I had the engine professionally rebuilt, and I've been enjoying riding it for the past 3-4 weeks. It's been running smooth and I've had no problems until today. It rode fine for a few hours, then seemed to lose power going up a hill. It creeped back home, but then would die when I got down to first gear at a stop. It seems to idle fine in neutral, but as soon as I put it into first gear, it dies. The battery is charged, plenty of fuel, the plugs look a bit fouled though. Any thoughts of what I should check prior to pulling out the checkbook to pay someone else to diagnose it? Thanks for your help!

It sounds liike it may be running rich. Check float levels, air/fuel screw adjustment, position of clip on jet needle, and one of LMs favorites is to cut a 1/4 inch off the end of plug wires, and reattach plug cap.

Thanks for the advice. I spoke with my engine builder, and he suggested I first replace the spark plugs, even though I may have cleaned them up, they may still be shot - it's a cheap band-aid fix for now. I will also take a look at the other items you suggested. I did make some minor adjustments to the fuel settings already, and will take a look at the needle as well. Since the plugs were fouled looking, I assume new ones will quickly look the same unless I remedy the fuel issue. On the side of the carb body are the 2 adjustment screws. Which one is the air/fuel screw? One is tucked in and almost flush with the carb body, while the other sticks out somewhat. The books I have don't show enough detail for me to tell which is which. I'll have to hunt for LM's posting concerning clipping the plug wires, since I have no idea what purpose that may serve, but I'll take your word that it could be a fix too. Thanks for your help! If anyone else has additional thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

clipping the plug wires will give you "fresh meat", new wire to connect to, you'll see if you take the plug cap off how the wire screws into the cap making contact with the inner wire. -dc

Air fuel is the screw that sits flush, towards front of bike. The other is idle speed screw.
