Help, have spark, bike ran, now not so much

Post by milwaukeephil » Thu Apr 17, 2008 8:26 pm

Hi -- please help! ('66 CA77)
I finally have spark after much troubleshooting, and have been able to get the motor running for a few seconds with a squirt of starter fluid down the spark plug holes. Until tonight, it wouldn't run off gas, and I guessed correctly that the carb was clogged.

I pulled out the jet (which was totally clogged), cleaned and reinstalled it, and the bike started right up and ran tonight for about 5 minutes, but then it quit. After that, I was unable to get it started again. I still have spark at the plugs, but the weird thing is it won't even kick over with the help of starter fluid.

So until it ran off gas, it always ran off starter fluid, but now that it has run for 5 minutes and quit, it won't even do that. Why won't the spark plugs ignite the starter fluid, much less gas?

I'm perplexed, and totally out of ideas... Could it just be REALLY flooded? It did backfire before it quit running.

Help please!!!
THANKS
-phil

when i got my dream running i seemed to have good spark, but it would take me 10-12 kicks to get it goin' and then it would run 'spotty'. i replaces the plugs and it fired on the first kick and ran smooth. it's worth a try ! a plug set at autoparts costs me $4.20

Thanks for the info, I'll get new plugs today. Any guesses as to the reason it may have fouled the plugs in 5 minutes?

Do you have compression? The starting fluid may have cooked the piston enough so when you ran gas for 5 min...it did the piston in.
