Following the application of the fixes mentioned by all respondents, the problem is
solved! I used a mild polish as SMBH had suggested since I thought the sand paper
approach would be a bit harsh and wanted to take it easy at first.
Once the slide was moving through the bore with no binding, I gave the carb a thorough
cleaning with Gumout, reassembled the unit CAREFULLY onto the head, then tuned both
units to the specs that LM has posted on another carburation thread.
The bike is running really well now. Next will be an electronic ignition, since going pointless
is another good way to minimize some of the upkeep and smoothe things out further.
