that's 80 mph, right, 130kmh?
i'd figure if everyhing was set up right you'd be able to get there. Never taken mine over 65, for similar reasons as to what you're explaining. Let me know if you get it solved.

My 31k-mile old girl whisks up to 80mph without even breaking into a sweat -- although I don't like to push any harder, simply out of mechanical respec' -- and breathes well on a pair of rebuilt '67 carbs. It does rattle like a bag of old spanners though (little ends), which I'm hoping to find time to cure this winter with my newly-acquired goodies.

I agree with davo: it sounds like weak mixture and/or poor spark advance. Both very undesirable; both together potentially mechanically fatal!
