Advice on cleaning & preparing a fuel tank
Advice on cleaning & preparing a fuel tankI've got a 1986 CB77 with 7700 original miles. The details and photos of the bike can be found at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hondacb77/ ... 162606404/
The gas tank has corrosion in it, but it is spotty and appears to be surface rust. The gas cap is heavily corroded and the gasket appears dried out. My questions are: #1 - Where can I purchase a new gasket and/or cap? #2 - How do I treat the corrosion? I have seen "kits" online that appear to be a multi-stage process of treatment followed by coating. Can anyone recommend a specific brand or type of kit? #3 - Any other advice is appreciated. Thanks, John
Concerning the dirty gas tank, here's what I did. Don't know if you want to go through the whole process, but it worked for me!
The gas cap can be disassembled and cleaned most likely unless you just want a shiny new chrome one.
Unless it is torn, the cork gasket can be re-used also and doesn't seem to spill as much gas as the new ones with rubber gaskets. The originals are stainless steel (at least mine was), and the replacements I have seen are chrome and have a different profile. You can find them on ebay or some of the vintage parts suppliers. http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopi ... ht=anatomy 66 dream, 78 cb750k, 02fz1, 09 wing
You'll find a new cap and replacement seal here http://classichondarestoration.com/. I also used the electrolasis method to clean up a very nasty tank. It takes some time , but is very inexpensive and highly effective.

As far as the tank lining is concerned, I've seen too many failed Kreem tanks to even give it any consderation.
The POR 15 is supposed to be better, but it is still critical to follow the prep and install procedures exactly. I would try an inline fuel filter first before lining the tank. The tank I'm using now was fairly rusty, and I rinsed it out with gas and installed a clear inline filter and it's working fine. 66 dream, 78 cb750k, 02fz1, 09 wing
